Dr. Sanjun Gu, an Extension horticulture specialist at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, recently spoke about his ongoing research and how growers can participate in the National Strawberry Sustainability Initiative’s (NSSI) strawberry survey.
There are 13 states currently participating in this nationwide survey, but Gu hopes to encourage more participation. The survey mainly focuses on the central and eastern parts of the United States. Its purpose is to determine the future of organic strawberry production and how the NSSI can better promote the strawberry industry in the United States.
The project received a $50,000 planning grant this year from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Research Initiative. This grant now funds the survey.
Gu encourages participation from commercial growers, researchers, managers and nursery growers who work with strawberries or who are interested in strawberry production. “The survey is very important to us and also important to the industry in the Southeast,” he said.
