Georgia hemp producers and processors who were licensed this year can now apply for a license for the 2022 season. The 2022 Georgia hemp grower license and processor permit window will reopen in January for all new applicants.

Tim Coolong, associate professor in the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, believes hemp acreage will not increase next season.

“I had several individuals reach out recently that they were unable to sell flower products. There’s just very few options for them unless they’re already tied in with the market,” Coolong said. “I do see a handful of people will probably continue to grow it for either their own market or one that they’ve already developed. I don’t anticipate any real increases in acreage moving forward.”

The Georgia Department of Agriculture regulates the cultivation and processing of hemp in Georgia under the authority of the Georgia Hemp Farming Act.
