Disaster-aid legislation has now been signed into law by President Trump. The bill includes $19.1 billion for areas that suffered from natural disasters, including southwest Georgia, southern Alabama and Florida’s Panhandle, which saw major destruction following Hurricane Michael.

While passing the aid for farmers impacted by Hurricane Michael is already a huge win, Congressman Buddy Carter (GA-1) is also pleased to have Georgia blueberries included in the legislation. During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Georgia blueberry growers suffered greatly from late freezes. The unusual weather caused severe crop destruction, and growers harvested only a third of what was expected.

Not only is blueberry production a major player in Georgia’s economy, it’s also crucial in Carter’s district. He was a big advocate for the blueberry industry in fighting to have it included in the $19.1 billion legislation. “This is much needed relief for those blueberry farmers,” he says.

According to Carter, those wishing to receive funds will have to go through a process similar to what Florida citrus growers are going through with the Wildfires and Hurricanes Indemnity Program. However, Carter is hoping to expedite the process to get producers the funds they need.

Overall, Carter is relieved to finally have legislation passed and an answer for the farmers who have been struggling. “I’m sorry it took so long, but we’re one step closer now and we’re very excited about that,” he concludes.
