The inaugural Organic Food and Farming Summit wrapped up on September 19. Presented by Florida Organic Growers (FOG), the summit featured presentations from top researchers, a trade show and farm tours. Andi Emrich, summit coordinator, says the event went extremely well.

Emrich says one year ago, the FOG board decided it wanted a conference that was specifically organic. The summit has made that dream come true. She says the ultimate goal of the summit was to show the benefits of organic production to conventional farmers, in hopes that they would implement organics in their own production systems. Emrich adds that a lot of conventional farmers attended the summit, so she hopes they got the message.

Another goal of the summit was to get farmers together to get dialogue from researchers and learn from one another. “What we’ve heard from farmers in the past is that’s the best way they learn,” Emrich says. She hopes that growers enjoyed networking at the summit and learning new techniques.

The Organic Food and Farming Summit took place at the Hilton in Gainesville, Florida, September 17–19.
